Agates are a banded form of the mineral Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. Agates have tremendous color variety and may be white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange, brown, pink, purple, gray, and black as well as combinations of these colors in bands, lines or other patterns. Agates are found in many locations around the world, although Brazil and Uruguay are the source of most of the world's supply. Agates usually occur as rounded, knobby nodules that are quite ugly in their natural state. Only when broken open are the beautiful colors and patterns revealed. Each Agate is unique in appearance, with no two Agates being the same. Red Lace Agate is a cream to light gray gemstone delicately patterned with a network of orange to red veination.
